Recorded 07/27/2017
Recorded 07/27/2017 This film is part of our bail series, "The Bail Trap: American Ransom." The reality is that 70% of people in jail are there for one reason: living in poverty. All the while, private companies are profiting in the billions each year. This must end.
New Jersey’s Money Bail Overhaul: A Success Story • BRAVE NEW FILMS
Recorded 02/28/2018
Recorded 02/28/2018 A success story – New Jersey’s historic money bail reform! On January 1, 2017, New Jersey essentially ended its money bail system. The state’s pretrial incarceration rate has since dropped nearly 20% and their crime rates have plummeted across the board. "New Jersey’s Money Bail Overhaul: A Success Story" tells the story of Tyler, who was arrested and given probation following an altercation with a relative. The court decided against prison time, and thanks to New Jersey’s system Tyler didn’t have to sit in jail for months to learn his fate. Thank you to our friends at ACLU Campaign for Smart Justice and Drug Policy Alliance for helping to end money bail in New Jersey.

An estimated 177,624 innocent Americans pleaded guilty in 2013 alone. Does this sound like a just system to you?

Bail, Fines, and Fees • Vera Institute of Justice
Recorded 07/25/2016
Recorded 07/25/2016 A look at how bail, fines, and fees in the criminal justice system impact poor communities in New Orleans In New Orleans, like other places, criminal justice agencies rely on money collected from defendants to fund their operating budgets. From the routine use of financial bail to post-conviction fines and fees, these practices come with hidden costs to defendants—the majority of whom are poor and black—and taxpayers alike. This video explains how bail, fines, and fees create a “user-pay” justice system that costs us all money and harms communities. It was produced as part of Vera’s project, "Past Due: Examining the True Costs of the User-Pay Justice System in New Orleans," which is measuring the true cost of these practices and developing recommendations for an alternative, sustainable funding structure. More information on that project can be found here: vera.org/projects/past-due-examining-the-true-costs-of-the-user-pay-justice-system-in-new-orleans The project is supported by the Charles Koch Institute, the Open Philanthropies Project, and the Laura and John Arnold Foundation. The results of the study are to be published in Fall 2016.
