Cruel and Unusual Punishment (Before Trial): A WorldWide View of Pretrial Detention and Money Bond

Recorded On: 06/25/2018

Each night, 3 million people around the world are being held in pretrial detention, 16% of those in the US (despite our having only 5% of the world's population). Recently the UN Report on poverty and human rights found that the US uses criminalization to conceal underlying poverty problems. Is there anything to be learned about how other countries - having 95% of the world's population but only 84% of the pretrial detention - administer pretrial justice? Join us for a discussion about the policies and practices from around the world - and let's see what we can learn.
