Join us on November 8 an 9 from 12pm-4pm ET for Equitable Pretrial Justice: Principles & Strategies.

This eight-hour class will cover the legal foundations and best practices in pretrial justice through a racial equity lens. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your local policies and practices, discuss how the field is evolving through litigation, research, and advocacy efforts, and identify opportunities for system improvement.

  • The goals of the pretrial process and its history of pretrial justice through an equity lens
  • The current state of pretrial justice and its impact of pretrial decision making on communities
  • Legal foundations and best practices for bail decision-making, pretrial release, and equitable treatment
  • National trends and current controversies in the field 
  • How to assess your local pretrial policies & practices

Who Should Take This Course? This course is ideal for advocates, public officials, or anyone else who is seeking to influence pretrial policy and practice or working with the pretrial population at the state and/or local level. If you have an interest in learning more about how to contribute to a pretrial process that advances equity, supports people safely in the community and closes the front door to mass incarceration, this class is for you.

Plan to set aside at least two hours in advance to review the pre-course work, and plan to log in early if you need tech support!  You will get the most out of the class if you participate on camera.

Tenille Patterson

Tenille Patterson is an Executive Partner with the Pretrial Justice Institute, where in partnership with Meghan Guevara, she leads PJI’s strategic visioning, program implementation and organizational management activities. Tenille has spent over 15 years as a nonprofit executive leader supporting mission critical organizations serving communities subject to systemic disinvestment, injustice and neglect. At PJI, Tenille oversees the finance, human resources, operations, and communications portfolios.    Tenille has a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Morgan State University and is a certified public accountant.

Shavonte Keaton, Esq.

Senior Associate

Pretrial Justice Institute

Shavonte is a Senior Associate at PJI, where she develops and implements the organization’s change work and curriculum. As a former foster youth and child of a formerly incarcerated parent, Shavonte has spent over a decade of her career using her legal expertise and life experiences to support her work in advancing systemic solutions to the distinct challenges and barriers that system-involved youth and families face. Her background includes working as a case manager for homeless youth and families as well as many years serving as a peer and professional advocate for current and former foster youth. Prior to coming to PJI, she served as the Georgia Assistant State Coordinator for the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI). She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from San Francisco State University and a Juris Doctor degree from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco.
